Effective interaction and cooperation between universities and other players in the innovation ecosystem is one of the most important factors in the growth and development of applied technologies in society. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to design a comprehensive model to explain the antecedents, processes, and consequences of inter-organizational interactions between universities in the development of technological innovation. In this regard, in a synthesis research design with a qualitative approach, while using the theory-building metasynthesis research method, the findings of related scientific studies were extracted and the collected data were analyzed through three stages of open, axial and selective coding. The research findings were presented in the form of 53 open codes and 12 axial codes in the three axes of antecedents, processes and consequences. The antecedents axis was formulated in the form of 3 core codes (individual, organizational, environmental factors); the processes axis was formulated in the form of 5 core codes (development of joint infrastructures, knowledge and technology transfer, joint project management, development of cooperation networks, knowledge management); and the consequences axis was formulated in the form of 4 core codes (development of innovative products and services, increasing organizational income, economic and social development of the community, enhancing the reputation of the university).To enhance the validity of the findings, four types of validation strategies were used: descriptive, interpretive, theoretical, and pragmatic. It should be noted that the findings of this study can help higher education leaders and policymakers design strategies for developing effective inter-institutional collaborations.
