The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of academic stress on academic burnout among lower secondary school students, considering the mediating role of social support and school culture. This research was descriptive-correlational in nature and based on structural equation modeling (SEM). The statistical population consisted of all female lower secondary school students in District 1 of Ardabil city during the 2024–2025 academic year, from which 365 students were selected using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. The research instruments included the Academic Stress Questionnaire by Gadzella (1994), the School Burnout Inventory by Salmela-Aro and Näätänen (2005), the Social Support Scale by Vaux et al. (1986), and the School Culture Questionnaire by Gruenert (2005). Path analysis results indicated that academic stress had a direct, positive, and significant effect on academic burnout. Furthermore, the mediating roles of social support and school culture in weakening the relationship between stress and burnout were confirmed. The model fit indices indicated a good fit. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that enhancing social support and improving school culture can be effective strategies to reduce academic burnout resulting from academic stress.
