Background and Objective:
Parental involvement in Iranian schools has traditionally been limited to attending meetings and providing peripheral support. Research indicates that meaningful parental engagement—where parents actively participate in educational decision-making, learning planning, and direct support of their children—enhances student outcomes. This study aimed to explain the transition from traditional parental involvement to active parental engagement in the teaching–learning process of children.
research methodology: A qualitative approach using Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory strategy was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with parents, teachers, and school administrators in Sanandaj. Theoretical sampling continued until data saturation was achieved. Data analysis followed three stages: open, axial, and selective coding.
Findings: Effective parental engagement requires strategies such as building trust with families, maintaining continuous school–parent communication, actively inviting parental participation, providing parenting skills training, involving parents in decision-making, respecting cultural differences, supporting low-literate parents, and enhancing parental capacity for educational engagement. Barriers include a weak culture of participation, time constraints, lack of supportive policies, and traditional perceptions of parents’ roles.
Conclusion: The study presents a theoretical model indicating that transitioning to active parental engagement depends on appropriate cultural, communicational, and policy infrastructures. These findings have practical implications for educational policy-making and the design of school-centered programs to foster meaningful parental participation.
